This workshop is an introduction to Fair Isle knitting using the Shetland making method on three double pointed needles. We will look at how you can achieve an even tension while working with two yarn colours in one knitting row. You will knit a small Fair Isle square from a pattern which can be turned into a lavender bag. We will also have time to look at Helen’s family collection of Fair Isle knitwear patterns.

Within a relaxed and supportive environment Helen will guide participants through new and unfamiliar techniques allowing them to gain confidence and new skills. It is Helen’s joy to share her love of knitting and design with others.

Skills required

Advanced beginner / Intermediate

Participants need to be competent knitters looking to expand their skills.

Materials required

Please bring:

  • 3 double pointed 3.25mm knitting needles 20 cm long

Yarn will be provided by Reffel.

About Helen Houston

Helen comes from a long line of Shetland knitters, learning to knit from her Mum and Granny which ignited her lifelong passion for textiles. Studying at the Scottish College of Textiles (now Heriot-Watt) Helen graduating in Textile Design and has spent 30 years researching and teaching CAD design and structures for industrial weaving. The rest of her time is spent as a designer maker for her knitwear brand Reffel and leading workshops to allow others to gain new textile skills.
